Two tips for homeowners who'll be having skylights installed

Here are two tips for any homeowner who'll be having a skylight installed in their home.

They should prep the area where the skylight installation will be happening

Homeowners should ensure that they prep the area of their home where they'll be having the skylight installed. For example, because the skylight installation contractors will need to cut through the interior wall plaster to make an opening for the skylight, and will then need to repair any adjacent plaster that is affected by this installation process, the homeowner should remove any posters or other wall decor they have displayed on the wall.

This will not only ensure that these items don't get in the contractors' way but will also prevent these things from getting damaged or covered in plaster dust. For the same reason, they should also remove any furniture from this area. Additionally, they might want to cover the floors with some plastic sheets, that will catch the plaster dust generated by the installation and thus prevent it from getting embedded into their flooring materials.

They should aim to get the skylight fitted on a dry day

If possible, homeowners who'll be using a skylight installation service should aim to have this job done on a dry day. The reason for this is that there will be a period of time during the window's installation when there will be an unprotected opening in the roof. If there's a sudden heavy downpour during this time, the rainwater could soak the room in which the skylight is being installed and possibly damage the interior roof components that are not completely waterproof (such as the rafters), before the contractors or the homeowner have a chance to cover it up.

Furthermore, because working on a roof in wet weather is extremely hazardous (as rain can make a roof's surface too slippery for a contractor to grip onto), the skylight installation contractors might, if it begins to rain heavily, need to stop working, cover the roof opening and return when it's dry to complete the fitting of the skylight.

By having this installation done on a dry day, not only will the homeowner stand a better chance of having their new skylight fitted sooner, but they also won't need to worry about having to dry out their rain-soaked home interior or about having to get repair work done to the vulnerable under-layers of the roof that will be temporarily exposed during the installation.
