5 Organisational Tips for Self-Storage Units

Renting a self-storage unit is a great way to reduce the amount of clutter in your home or to keep possessions safe while you travel or downsize. While it is tempting to throw in all your stuff, lock up the unit, and forget about it, a little organisation can make your life a lot easier when you come to reclaim your belongings. Use these tips to keep your storage unit organised.

1. Choose an Appropriate Unit Size

Choosing the smallest possible self-storage unit might save you money, but trying to cram all your things into a tiny space can make it impossible to put an organisational system in place. It might be worth spending a little more money to rent a unit that gives you enough space to move around inside once all your belongings are in place.

2. Use Labels

When you return to your storage unit in a year or two, you won't remember which generic cardboard box contains the item you urgently need. Save yourself stress in the future by labelling every box that you put into storage. Remember to store the boxes with their labels clearly visible.

3. Keep Frequently Needed Items Accessible

Before you fill up the unit, take the time to think about which items you might need to retrieve from it soonest. Store these items near the unit's door so you can quickly get them without needing to move everything else that is in the unit.

4. Store Items Vertically — But Safely!

If you only stack items one box deep in your storage unit, you will miss out on a lot of vertical space. However, it is important not to build tall towers of items that are likely to collapse and injure someone. One good way to make the most of vertical space is to install temporary shelving in the unit. Be sure to check that the shelves can take the weight of your items before you settle them in place. If you are packing items into boxes, it can be helpful to combine lighter items such as clothes with heavier ones such as books or kitchenware.

5. Deconstruct Furniture

If you need to store bulky furniture items in your unit, you can save space by disassembling them first. Taking items apart also makes moving the furniture into the unit much easier. Be sure to keep instructions for reassembly in a handy place.
