Three Signs It's Time To Buy New Blinds

One of the loveliest things about spring is the opportunity to throw open the windows and let warm air into your home. However, while opening the blinds to get to the windows, this is the time of year when any damage done over winter is often discovered. As a first-time homeowner who does not know a lot about blinds, here are three signs that it's time for you to buy new blinds.

Mould Or Mildew

Because blinds are located next to windows which experience condensation buildup over the winter months, it is not unusual to take a closer look at blinds in spring and find mould or mildew growing on them. While the mould/mildew can be cleaned away by washing it with water and detergent, if it has been there for some time, the fungus spores become embedded in the blind fabric and stain it permanently. Rather than risking mould/mildew regrowth and having to look at stained blinds, buying new ones is a better option.

Frayed Cords

Cords are an important part of the internal mechanism of your blinds, so frayed cords are a sign your blinds are at the end of their lifespan. The cords are necessary for opening and closing the blinds as well as raising and lowering them, so if they break mid-action, you're left with blinds that are unable to function. Additionally, frayed cords which are waiting to break are a potential hazard to very young children as they could give way while being tugged on. New blinds with new cords are the answer to this issue.

Discolouration

Over time, white fabric turns yellow when exposed to continuous UV rays coming through your window. Whilst this is not a health hazard, the yellow discolouration of your blinds is not aesthetically pleasing, and it is not something which can be bleached away to whiten them again. Secondly, once UV rays penetrate the fabric to turn it yellow, there is no longer protection for the fibres, and these will start to break down and the blind fabric falls apart. Purchasing new blinds means you get new material which is UV protected and is the colour you want them to be.

New blinds are a lovely way to reinvigorate your windows and freshen them up now that spring is in the air. Have a chat with your local blinds supplier to see what are the best options for your home.
