Ways To Give The Sense Of Space When Designing Your Bathroom

A spacious feeling is always a plus in a bathroom. Whether yours is large or compact, you might still be interested in creating a sense of openness when undergoing bathroom renovations. Here are several design tips to help you achieve this.

Stick With A Light Colour Palette

To give the impression of a larger area, opt for paler colours for the floor, walls and other surfaces. A bright room tends to feel more spacious, while a dim one often feels more confined. Cool pale hues, such as blues and greens, bounce light around, increasing the room's illumination. To build on the sense of space, avoid creating contrast, which visually breaks up an area. With light-toned walls, you can continue the paint across the ceiling to create an uninterrupted flow.

Allow In Daylight

While pale surfaces make the most of existing daylight, you could design the bathroom to allow more to flow in initially. If you can't enlarge the window, consider its coverings. Frosted glass lets in diffused light while providing privacy, so you don't need to dress the window. Alternatively, a skylight might be a good option, particularly if nearby neighbours or regulations don't allow you to extend a vertical window.

Incorporate A Frameless Shower

Consider installing a frameless or semi-frameless shower. Because glass is transparent, the enclosure won't visually section off a chunk of the bathroom. Of course, it does this physically containing the water within the enclosure. The less framing there is around the glass, the more invisible it appears and the greater the feeling of expanse is. Extending the tiling within the shower to the ceiling will give a sense of height by smoothing the transition between the tile and wall surfaces and thus reducing contrast.

Install Recessed Fittings

One way to increase the actual space, however minutely, is with recessed cabinetry. Anything that protrudes takes up free air and also adds clutter. In the shower enclosure, why not recess the soap dish and other elements? If your bathroom has a toilet, you could hide the cistern behind the wall for a streamlined, modern look.

Add A Generous Mirror

Be generous with your mirror; install one as wide and tall as possible for maximum impact. Mirrors provide a sense of space and dimension, visually expanding the room. Even though you recognise the surface as reflective, it still gives the illusion that the place is much larger than in reality, extending beyond the mirror.
