Four Uses of LED Technology around the Home

Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) have been around for decades, and you probably have one or two in many of the devices you use, even if it is simply to signal that the product in question is switched on. Because they are low in energy consumption—compared to a standard incandescent light bulb, for example—LEDs are increasingly used in illumination products, such as domestic wall lamps and street lighting. The problem with LEDs is that they don't produce as much light as a conventional bulb on their own. For this reason, LEDs are usually put together in sets, called arrays, so that the intensity of their light output increases. These days, LEDs are used for all sorts of lighting products around the home. Which are the most common ones?

1. LED Solar Flood Lights

Because solar flood lights are powered by the energy they capture during the day from the sun, there is no need to connect them to the mains electrical supply. This is a big advantage when you are installing them on the outside of your home as well as in your garden because you don't need to run cables all the way around. Solar flood lights are great for illuminating your garden when you hold a party but also to deter criminals from coming onto your property, especially if you control your LED flood lights with a motion detector unit.

2. LED Bollards

Illuminated bollards don't need a high intensity of light—they just need to mark the way for a driveway or a parking area in the dark. This makes them an ideal application for LEDs where you won't require a large array. LED bollards can be used to light pathways with a low level of lighting beneath eye level, which is subtle in its approach.

3. LED Wall Splashes

If you want an architectural look on the outside of your home, then an LED wall fitting which splashes light over it will do the job. These products tend to throw light vertically over a wall in a fan-shape and highlight a feature wall such that it throws reflected light back at the viewer.

4. Colour Changing LEDs

Many LEDs provide white light, but you can buy control systems which allow certain fittings to change their colour and create some extravagant effects. This look is great for an outdoor swimming pool, for example, or you can use the lights indoors to make your own stylish disco room.
