What You Need To Know About Cleaning Your Window Blinds

Blinds are a popular window treatment, thanks to the functional and aesthetic value they add to any space.  As a window covering, dirt, dust and other debris from both outside and inside your home may find their way onto your blinds.

Knowing how and when to clean the blinds will not only ensure your coverings look pleasantly clean and attractive, and just with regular cleaning, you could extend the useful life of these window coverings.

How Often?

If you can remember you clean your blinds every time you are cleaning the rest of the house, good on you. Regular cleaning will effectively prevent the buildup of dust and dirt, and you will only need to do a quick dusting off during your next clean.

As for deep thorough cleaning, you can slot that in for every few months, or even do it monthly.  How often you clean out your blinds will depend on the amount of dirt and dust deposited on the blinds. This amount will depend on, among other factors, the location of your home.

It's important to remember that you won't have to set apart a whole day to clean your blinds. As a matter of fact, it should take you less than an hour to complete the job. It will, however, take longer, if you intend on taking down the whole thing in order to clean.

The Material Matters

Blinds are made from different materials including wood, plastic and metal.  It goes without saying that the type of material used to make the blind will greatly influence the cleaning techniques that can safely be used.  Take wooden blinds, for example; even if the wood is treated and sealed, washing with water may cause the wood to discolour and warp. The same goes for using cleaning agents with potent and harsh chemicals, which will only eat away at and damage the wood.

While water may be a no-no for wooden blinds, cleaning with water is everything when it comes to aluminium blinds, which are made from metallic material. You can even soak the blind in a bathtub full of water to loosen any debris sitting on the surface of the blind before wiping off the dirt.

Cleaning your blinds is nothing near the difficult task you may have always thought it out to be, and it definitely won't take up nearly as much of your time. It's quick and easy, leaving you to enjoy clean coverings that will last a long time.
